May news update
It’s May already and with plenty happening so far this year, it’s timely to update you on the work Bay of Connections has been doing and some key events in the next month.
BOC Yearly Forum
The Bay of Connections and Regional Growth Programme yearly forum will take place on July 14 at Rotorua’s Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.
You’ll be receiving a formal invitation in the next week or so, but in the meantime please make sure it’s in your diary.
The forum will start at 10.15am and be followed by a light lunch.
It is your chance to be updated on the progress made so far, get an overview on the Action Plan refresh that has recently taken place and provide us with your feedback.
Regional Growth Study Action Plan Refresh
It is 18 months since the Action Plan was launched, and with significant work completed and new opportunities arising, it’s timely to review and update the nine work stream areas. This has involved looking at the actions that have been completed, those that need to be updated and any that may no longer relevant in the current operating environment.
This isn’t a full review – that’s likely to happen in about 18 months’ time – but the refresh looks at the milestones that have been achieved, agreeing and prioritising activities, as well as take on board any learnings.
It is also very much about making sure the goals are achievable, realistic and refined.
The process has taken place over the past three months and has involved each Action Lead and their relevant Central Government partner, with oversight from the Management Group, portfolio manager Cheryl Lewis as well as input from relevant action/stakeholder groups where required.
The refreshed plan will be presented at the upcoming yearly forum.
On Thursday, Tourism Minister Paula Bennett announced a new $102 million Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
The fund, to be provided over the next four years in partnership with local councils and other community organisations, is for projects like new carparks, toilets and freedom camping facilities.
It is about helping communities respond to demand and address capability constraints as well as helping facilitate future growth. We expect this may link with the work being done in the Action Plan around the Visitor Economy.
Visit from Minister Simon Bridges
Regional Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges will be in Rotorua on May 19 to meet with the Bay of Connections Governance Group and representatives from the Tertiary Intentions Strategy Leadership Group.
Quayside's $30 million investment partnership
Horticulture and Maori land utilisation are two clearly identified areas of opportunity in the Regional Growth Study, and last month’s announcement of a $30 million Bay of Plenty kiwifruit orchard investment partnership will help bring some of the region’s significant economic growth potential to life.
Read more here about the partnership between Quayside Holdings Ltd and Te Tumu Paeroa.
If you have an upcoming tender/procurement process, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) now has some useful templates available for download from its website. The templates are easy to use and can be adapted for individual projects, and help ensure your process is complete and legally compliant.
These documents, with the help of the MBIE procurement team, have been used to support the Kawerau Container Terminal project with considerable success.
We are continuing to think of everyone in the Eastern Bay, especially those in Edgecumbe, who have been impacted by last month’s weather events.
