Connecting the region's cycle trails
While well-connected cycle trails have obvious lifestyle, commuter and climate change impacts, there is also the potential to drive economic and tourism returns.
A myriad of cycle trails are already in place in towns and cities across the Bay of Plenty, and now a small project team has been established to look at how these can be connected between the different areas to help fuel economic development and tourism.
An initial workshop was hosted by Destination Rotorua in April, with representatives from district councils, mountain bike/cycle trail ‘owners’, DOC, Sport BOP, local cycle groups, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Destination Rotorua and Bay of Connections.

Immediate actions out of the hui include developing a project scope and contracting a project lead to progress developments and connectivity on the ground, and engaging the Bay of Plenty Regional Council GIS team to map the existing trails at a local and regional level.
We’ll share further information about the Project Lead contract once it develops – watch this space.
