Production forests occupy 20 per cent of the land in the wider Bay of Plenty region. There is significant capital invested in processing facilities, and a large number of people are employed in the forests or the processing facilities. Production forests require land to be committed for a long term, but returns, under a commodity product production model, are ultimately dependent on international demand within the harvesting window.

The updated Forestry & Wood Processing Strategy was developed and launched in 2014.
