The Freight Logistics Strategy aims to create world-class freight logistics within the wider Bay of Plenty region and lift New Zealand’s rankings in logistics performance. The strategy’s implementation is facilitated by the Freight Logistics Action Group (FLAG), which provides strong commercial leadership and advocacy.
The strategy takes an inter-regional and multi-sector, multi-modal overview, encompassing road, rail, sea and air. It includes four sub-groups:
- Workforce and skills
- Health, safety and environment
Collaboration and partnership are two themes that run throughout the strategy and are critical to achieving a world-class freight logistics region and building on significant assets such as the Port of Tauranga. A pooling of resources and a greater awareness of the benefits of sharing information is required for the industry to grow, with opportunities for collective action with a particular focus on breaking down competitive activities into real and perceived.
Logistics is more than just physical operations and infrastructure. It is also about building relationships between businesses and creating opportunities for real-time information sharing. Improving New Zealand’s rankings in logistics performance also means working to improve safety, reduce the impact on the environment and preserve community values.
